Paracetamol Not Banned in India: Government Prohibits 16 Fixed-Dose Combination Drugs
New Delhi: Social media posts claiming that paracetamol has been banned in India have created confusion among the public. However, the claim is false. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has not banned paracetamol. Instead, it has prohibited 16 Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) medicines that were found to have no proven therapeutic benefit and could pose health risks.
The latest order, issued in June 2026, came into effect immediately after recommendations from an expert committee. Fixed-Dose Combination (FDC) drugs are medicines that combine two or more active ingredients into a single tablet or capsule. According to health experts, some of these combinations lacked scientific justification and could expose patients to unnecessary side effects.
Among the banned medicines are several combinations that contain paracetamol, including:
– Paracetamol + Lignocaine
– Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide
– Dicyclomine + Paracetamol + Clidinium Bromide + Chlordiazepoxide
The government has also reinforced the ban on high-dose Nimesulide + Paracetamol oral combinations, particularly those containing more than 100 mg of Nimesulide. Medical experts have linked such high-dose formulations to an increased risk of severe liver and kidney damage, leading authorities to continue strict action against their manufacture and sale.
Health officials emphasized that regular paracetamol tablets and syrups remain completely legal and available across India. The restriction applies only to the specific drug combinations listed in the government’s notification, not to paracetamol as a standalone medicine.
The Ministry has advised the public not to rely on misleading social media posts and to verify medicine-related information through official government announcements or healthcare professionals before sharing or acting on such claims.
Bottom Line: Paracetamol is not banned in India. Only 16 specific fixed-dose combination medicines, including a few containing paracetamol, have been prohibited in the interest of public safety.
